Mac's party was wonderful! A gaggle of Mac's pj clad friends had a great time playing, munching mini breakfast food, and making froot loop necklaces. We grown ups had a fine time ourselves between some chatting, some snacking, and plenty of mimosas. I'll post more photos soon but check out these ones taken by my neighbor Katie. And while your there poke around her blog. She's got a great eye, a lovely perspective, and adorable kids. Oh and really good recipes too. It has quickly become one of my favorite blogs around.

At 6 months Ronan is one of those perfectly smiley, happy, chunky babies that is so delicious. He's mastered rolling over and crawling looks like it is just around the corner. Ronan has joined his brother in the great eater, terrible sleeper club (partial bummer). He definitely reciprocates Mac's love. Nothing makes Ronan laugh more than watching Mac jump on the bed or make silly faces. Hooray for brothers!

Though he wasn't especially cooperative for the perspectives photo shoot, 3 year old Mac is awesome! He's crazy for pirates and dinosaurs. Is figuring out the world and asks millions of questions to help in the effort (today's included, "but how does the smoke detector know there is smoke?" and "what's a spit valve?" ). He's started to be afraid of things (the previously mentioned smoke detector and lions eating him) which is difficult from a parenting perspective. Though he isn't into Ronan touching any of his things, Mac loves his brother. He regularly lays down with Ronan and "does smiles." Now if he'd only go to sleep!

A happy halloween

We had a great Halloween week. Between a school party, trick-or-treating at Dave's office, a courtyard party, and real deal trick-or-treating Mac has been hopped up on candy for days. And naps have gone out the window too. My friend Katie assures me that the no nap thing is just a phase. Oh please let her be right! Hopefully November will bring a return of sleep and more lovely fall weather.

Mac was a pirate this year and the night before his school ?Halloween party he said, "Mommy, pirates steal and drink rum and tomorrow I am going to steal and drink rum like a pirate!" I said, "Ummm, maybe you should pretend to steal and drink rum since you are a pretend pirate," to which he responded, "Silly mommy, I'm a real pirate so I'll real steal and real drink rum!"

Size Perspective- 18 months

At 18 months Mac is running, jumping, and talking up a storm. He loves to eat beans+rice+cheese and peaches (which sounds a lot like fishes). He's doing pretty well with the potty training but hasn't quite mastered consistently sleeping through the night. Those things are woefully out of order but we have high hopes that someday soon he'll get the sleeping thing down. When I once worried that Mac wasn't yet holding up his head a wise friend told me to settle down and asked if I knew any adult who still walked around with a floppy head. I don't worry so much anymore. Eventually Mac will figure out how to sleep, I don't know a single teenager who doesn't have it down pat.

Mac started Montessori preschool last week and he loves it! Here are a couple of pics of his first day, his first set of art projects, and some shots taken of him in class (sorry for the quality, pictures of pictures never turn out but the scanner is on the fritz). As you can tell from the photos, school seems to suit him. His class is small (8 kids) and the teachers seem great. The class has a guinea pig named Cups and a tank full of gold fish. The kids bring their lunches and eat together. One day last week I was a little early picking him up and watched through the door as Mac finished his lunch, washed and rinsed his dishes at the kid sized wash table, and then put away his placemat. I was quite impressed--- less than a week in and Mac is already picking up after himself! Now if only we could transfer those new skills to life at home.

…. and we’re back! Greetings from sunny Colorado. In case I didn’t tell you (which is highly likely given the craziness of the last several months), we’ve moved to lovely Denver. The Mile High City. Turns out that metro-DC is not the right place for us, so we away we went. After a tense few months of job hunting and house building we made it home to Colorado. It has been a total whirlwind (hence the lack of blogging) but we’re here and all is well. Now that things are calming down a bit I promise there will be more frequent and regular updates to the blog.

All is well with not so tiny Mac. At 16 months he is a pole bean who weighs 23.5lbs (30th percentile) and is nearly 33 inches tall (95th percentile). He can run, talk a lot (though when he isn't sure of the right word the item in question is either an apple or a car), and throw a mean temper tantrum complete with stomping of feet. He loves to read (especially books about cars, trucks, tractors, trains, and airplanes), hates cows milk, and is a fickle eater. Oh and his feet stink, bad. Nearly a year and a half in and Dave and I are still smitten.

Finally. It has been raining for a week and toddler+tiny apartment= no fun, so we gratefully took full advantage of the beautiful afternoon at the playground.

Disney World

When in Orlando, right? I had low expectations for our visit to Disney. I thought Mac was way too young to get anything out of it and I am a bit eh about Disney anything. Buuuut… it we all had a great time. Mac was especially enamored with the Country Bear Jamboree. He was beside himself with glee—laughing, clapping, pointing, and putting his hands on his head in disbelief— while watching it. I have never seen him so excited about anything. It’s a Small World and the Carousel were also big hits. I think perhaps we’ll go back someday and bring Dave along!

Shuttle Launch

While in Orlando a few weeks ago we were lucky enough to see the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-119). Seeing a shuttle launch has been on my ‘must do before I die’ list but seemed unlikely given the limited number of launches left (9 are scheduled) and the challenge of scheduling a trip for the purpose of seeing a launch (they are often delayed). Lucky for us this launch had been delayed a few days—right into our trip. It was amazing! Far more beautiful than I ever imagined. The launch director even said, “I’ve seen a lot of launches and this was the most visibly beautiful launch I’ve ever seen.” You can see video here and an awesome photo from a different view spot here.

P.S.
The close up pic of the launch pad is from a private tour my dad, stepmom Jan, and brother Jansson were given of Kennedy Space Center (it's nice to have astronaut friends!). Mac and I were already home so sadly missed it. Sniff, sniff.

I’m sorry to have taken such a long hiatus from blogging—it has been nutty around here. Dave and I both been slammed with work and Mac has turned into a very busy toddler so time has been limited. In the hospital, just after Mac was born, Dave said, "how cool would it be to take a photo of Mac's head in my hand every month and then put them all together when he's one?" and the perspective series was born. We didn't quite make the every month goal but it turned out pretty cool all the same.

Can you believe Mac is 1?! Can you believe that Obama is our President?! I can’t seem to wrap my head around either but am beyond thrilled with both. Seriously, does it get any better than baby turns 1+bye bye Bush? Taryn, Tim, Samantha, and Ella came to DC for a joint inauguration/Mac’s birthday celebration and then Dave’s mom came for the weekend. Mac scored a bunch of great presents (thank you grammy, gg+tim,gpa+jan, rach+knox, lena+meatball, maya+kevin, jeremy, bina, ttsec, and anyone I may have forgotten) including a hot car, a super cute sweater, his very own remote, and a king cake overnighted from New Orleans. Yay for being 1!

Mac is madly in love with Christmas lights, especially colored ones that blink. To avoid scenes likes this...

I made him his own light box (a strand of lights in a tupperware w/ a slit in the top for the cord, voila!) which he holds and shakes and loves. Though not colored, they blink which is endlessly entertaining. Now if only I could find colored, battery operated lights it would be perfect!

Nearly 9 months

This last month and a half-ish was big for little Mac. While in New Orleans he got his first 2 teeth. In New York he got his first bad cold. And in LA he learned to pull himself up. He also mastered crawling, feeding himself (it's messy but effective), and drinking from a cup. Oh and how could I forget, he said his first word... mom-mom! It's no mama, the second m is definitely pronounced and it usually comes out mom-mom-mom-mom-mom-mom. Dad-dad is surely around the corner.

It has been a big week around here. Mac mastered forward crawling, started using the milk sign (mostly at the right time), and got his first 2 teeth! The crawling has changed our world. With the new found freedom, Mac is doubly curious and especially interested in things he can't have. This morning he took off from the bedroom directly for the electrical outlet in the hall. Shoes and stroller wheels apparently taste fantastic. I suppose I should start vacuuming more often. Sigh.

Gone are the days of Mac the lump, put him down and there he will stay. He is nearly crawling. Mac has all of the pieces down but can only go backward so far. And sitting still is an impossibility. I tried the bouncy seat one last time in hopes of getting in a quick shower but he busted out and flipped over. Way to go mobile Mac!

Upstate visit

Mac and I visited our friends Taryn, Tim, and their daughter Samantha in the Berkshires a few weeks ago. It was a great trip- totally relaxing and filled with amazing food (more on that below), great wine, and shopping.

Tim is the chef at the Bottle Tree Restaurant in Ancram. We ate there twice and it was beyond amazing. If you happen to be in the area stop on by, you won’t be disappointed. Check out a more eloquent review here.

I wish we lived closer not only because I miss Taryn but because Millerton and the surrounding areas are beautiful and very cool. It’s a perfect NYC getaway without the pretentiousness of the Hamptons or the touristy kitsch of other mountain towns. Can’t wait to go back!

Between multiple trips to Colorado and a trip to upstate NY, Mac has become quite the traveler. Mac seems to prefer flying to driving- he charms flight attendants and fellow passengers, seems un-phased by the time changes, and naps like a champ (see photo below!) but pretty much despises every moment in his car seat. Good thing he likes to fly because there are several more trips (New Orleans, NYC, St. Louis, and LA) slated for the coming months. Look for us in a city near you.

Nienie, whose blog I read, was in private plane crash that killed the flight instructor and seriously injured she and her husband, Christian. Stephanie (Nienie) & Christian have 4 small kids, as does the flight instructor. Makes me very, very sad.

came to visit. It poured rain in New Orleans almost the entire time they were in town dashing our Jazz Fest hopes. We still did a ton of stuff and had a great time. Mac enjoyed his first baseball game and fireworks, though he was a bit oblivious thanks to his super cool ear muffs.

We watched the NFL draft. Dave was quite thrilled with this year’s class. I was so disappointed with Meachem last year that they all seem an improvement. It’s too bad we won’t be here for the season.

We went to Avery Island- the home of Tabasco. The tour was unbelievably lame but the grounds were incredible. In the 1890’s E.A. McIlhenny, one of Tabasco family heirs, founded a snowy egret preserve on the island. Each year thousands of egrets use the island as stopping off point to hatch their young. There are also tons of alligators, beautiful rare plants, and tons of mossy oaks. We were lucky enough to witness a bit of egret slaughter as well. One of the babies was apparently not a great flyer and ended up in the water where it was promptly eaten by a gator. Yum, yum.

Mother's Day

It was lovely. Mac and Dave gave me this gorgeous necklace from Figs & Ginger (via LeMieux Gallery). In addition to being super talented, the artists Elijah & Rhonda Wyman, are totally green with their business. They use reclaimed silver and gold, run their equipment off solar and wind power, recycle everything, and more. I am trying harder to buy locally, handmade, and green. One of my resolutions was to buy only handmade gifts this year. I haven’t been totally successful but am trying. You should too! Etsy is a great place to start.

Sorry I’ve been a bad blogger recently. Between family visits, big work projects, and getting ready for the move things have been nutty around here. Mac weighed in at 16 lbs and 25 inches at his latest check up. At 3 months he can:
• Giggle
• Babble a bit
• Suck thumb
• Hold stuff
• Scoot around the bed
• Sit (with help)
• Do downward dog & plank positions at yoga (with help)
• Sleep 8 hours in one stretch

Yay for family!

My Dad, stepmom Jan, and little brother Jansson were the third caravan of family visitors. The visit was packed with activity! We installed ceiling fans and a microwave, ate great food, saw tons of alligators on a swamp walk in Jean Lafitte Park, and tons more. Jansson proved to be an excellent uncle. Jan began the CSU indoctrination, she'll make him a little Ram yet! Mac was totally enamored with my Dad, especially when he spoke Swedish to him. Who knew saying "Sven, Soren, and Sweden" in the appropriate accent would result in the happiest baby ever?! Unfortunately it seems only Grandpa can do it right. I've tried but Mac doesn't like it nearly as much.

We're a little late with the perspective series this month. After Mac's first birthday we'll put them all together somehow to show how he's grown, in the meantime I hope you enjoy them this way.

I saw this similar and very cool (also way less complicated!) way to capture baby's changes over the first year. Every month they took a photo of the baby lying on the very modern Stendig calendar. I like!

Check out Mac's newest skill. Add that to smiling, tracking objects, and being seriously vocal. He's now 12lbs 15 oz (can we just call it and even 13?), 23 1/4 inches long, and the proud recipient of his first 2 immunizations. The kid is coming along!

Not sure you can tell from the photo but I a holding my very own In the Pocket Baby! I posted about this very cool portable, pocket-sized highchair back in February (here). Lucky for me I have great friends! Justin, Leigh-Anne, and baby Linus (only 3 days older than Mac) fanagled and coordianted with people arcoss Europe and now I have one! Yay! Thanks Krometi!!!

Adventures with GG & Grandpa Tim

These photos don't accurately capture the adventures of our visit from my Mom (GG) and Stepdad (Grandpa Tim). We ripped out our kitchen, installed new lighting throughout the apartment, and more. We were thrilled to have the help and they loved hanging out with Mac.

Mac is now 6.5 weeks old, weighs more than 10.5 lbs, and is 22ish inches long ! Here is the size perspective set from his 1 month birthday. He wasn't very into taking pictures that night so the photos aren't as good as the last batch. Oh well.

Sorry for the gap in posting, things have been busy around here. Dave's mom Ruth came for a visit last weekend, my mom Gale and step-dad Tim just left today, and we began renovating our kitchen in preparation for selling our place. Life with a new baby eats your brain. Everyday you do things like put the clothes in the dryer but forget to turn it on, heat food in the microwave and forget all about it, and, in my case, put a soda in the freezer (because I forgot to put any in the fridge) to chill quickly only to forget all about it. Sigh. The curse of the half chore strikes again.

I know yesterday I talked about how tiny Mac is but the kid is packing on the ounces! Although it's a crappy phone photo you can really see how his cheeks are filling out.

Mac's first family visitor! My cousin Martha was in town last weekend for a conference and came over with her friend Emily for pizza and some Mac time. It was the perfect mellow night.
